– Is stress the right answer to your company’s well-being?
Recently, someone told me that she loved stress in her job. She loved the feeling of being hectic and busy in the office.
I asked her if it’s the stress she loves, or having worthwhile goals, that motivate her to come into the office? If you train for a marathon, you can accept the pain of training. You know that the joy and happiness of crossing the finish line makes it all worth it. π
In my view, well-balanced human beings will search for as many as possible moments of well-being. They allow themselves to suffer for some time. But they will only do so, if the suffering is less than the expected joy and well-being they will get once they deliver their job.
I see seven ingredients that will provide your employees with a feeling of well-being:
1. Feeling healthy and energetic
2. Having worthwhile goals
3. Experiencing peace of mind
4. Enjoying loving relationships
5. Working towards a life’s purpose
6. Financial independence
7. Developing self-knowledge
Employees’ actions are almost like a profit and loss statement. The balance must show a profit, or it’s not worth it. If you want to keep your workforce up and running, there must be some kind of alignment between the needs of your company and those of the individual employees.
Translating the seven ingredients for your employees into seven aligned ingredients for your company’s well-being, they may look like this:
1. Having a healthy and energetic team, with little sickness leave.
2. Having clear business goals defined, for short, medium and long term.
3. Delivering value to your customers and knowing that it will improve the world.
4. Having an engaged workforce and healthy, inspiring stakeholder relations.
5. Living the company’s mission.
6. Making sustainable sales and profit.
7. Knowing and developing the strengths and weaknesses of the company.
When you’re able to align the company’s ingredients with those of the individual employees, you will develop a reliable and highly motivated workforce that will work towards your business’ improvement.
